If you’re on a keto diet and thought sausage balls were a thing of the past, I have good news! This Keto Sausage Balls Recipe just might change your life.

I’m a huge fan of traditional sausage balls and was so sad at the thought of missing out on their yumminess. Thankfully, these low carb sausage balls are amazingly delicious. This is one of my favorite recipes. And my whole family love these delicious keto sausage balls…even the people who don’t do keto love it!
These sausage balls make perfect appetizers, but they also make a great breakfast or a great snack! This is definitely a game day favorite at our house and I always make a bajillion of these keto appetizers whenever we host a party or attend a celebration where I’m worried about being tempted by junk food.
I first remember eating sausage balls when I was in college in Tennessee. I’m pretty sure they’re a southern thing. Wherever they originate from, these cheesy, sausage-y balls of goodness are amazing.
The sausage ball recipes I ate back in the day all used a baking mix like Bisquik. Obviously that wouldn’t work with a low carb diet. So I decided to hit the internet to see if I could find any low carb recipes.
When I started looking for keto sausage ball recipes, all the recipes I found used coconut flour..and I didn’t have any on hand. So I did what I do best, I improvised. I played around with the recipe using almond flour and after a few tries, I found what I think is the perfect combination of ingredients. And if you’re following a keto diet, the ingredients are all common ingredients that you already have in your fridge and pantry

Preheat oven to 350º. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. I like to use my KitchenAid to mix this, but you could use a hand mixer, a food processor or your hands.
Use a cookie scoop to scoop out sausage mixture and place on your baking sheet.
Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
Can you use coconut flour instead of almond flour?
Yes, but the substitution is not a 1:1 substitute. You’ll use 1/4 cup of coconut flour for every 1 cup of almond flour called for. You’ll also need to add 1 egg in addition to what’s called for in the recipe for every 1/4 cup of coconut flour you use.
Can I use almond meal instead of almond flour?
Many people use the terms almond meal and almond flour interchangeably, however almond flour is made from blanched peeled almonds while almond meal is made from raw unpeeled almonds, so the texture is different.
Can I add cream cheese to these?
Yep. You sure can. I’m a huge fan of cream cheese sausage balls. When I originally started making these, I always made them with cream cheese, but then we had a pandemic and supply chain issues and I had a hard time finding cream cheese in my area…so I tried making them without and they were still good.
If you want to add cream cheese, I recommend adding 4 ounces and keeping the rest of the ingredients the same.
What do you serve sausage balls with?
If I’m eating sausage balls for breakfast, I typically eat one with a sunny-side-up egg. Or sometimes if I’m feeling really decadent, I’ll eat it with a keto pancake and an egg.
I most typically eat sausage balls as a game day treat, for breakfast, or as a quick grab and go snack.
How do you store these keto sausage balls?
If you’re planning on eating them quickly, you can store them in an airtight container in your fridge. I recommend placing a single layer in the container and then adding a piece of parchment paper between layers.
If you made a huge batch, you can store them in an airtight container or a freezer storage bag in the freezer. {see below}
Can you freeze keto sausage balls?
Yes. You can do it 2 different ways. You can freeze them after you’ve cooked them or you can freeze them before you’ve cooked them.
If you freeze them after you cook them, they’re perfect for a quick snack or breakfast that you just toss in the microwave. You’ll just want to allow them to cool and them place them in a freezer-safe container or ziploc bag.
You can also flash freeze them on a cookie sheet after you’ve mixed them and scooped them into balls. Freeze them for 2 hours on the cookie sheet and then place them all in a ziploc freezer bag and bake them as needed. You’ll need to add more cooking time if you take them from frozen straight to the oven.
Make sure you mark the container you store your low-carb sausage balls in so that you know whether your sausage balls are cooked or uncooked so you don’t end up eating a raw sausage ball. They look very similar when they’re frozen.
Can you double or triple this recipe?
You sure can! And I regularly do. Keep in mind that if you double or triple this recipe, you’ll probably want to use a stand mixer with a dough hook as it can be a lot to try to mix by hand.
What kind of sausage should I use in these?
While I typically use regular pork sausage, you could use hot sausage if you want something spicier .You can also use italian sausage if that’s your jam. You can pretty much use any kind of sausage that makes your heart happy.
Feel free to also add garlic powder, Italian seasoning, onion powder, paprika or red pepper flakes to add more flavor to these sausage cheese balls.
